Install Tampermonkey and the Twitter Scroll Capture userscript

Use this step-by-step guide when you need to capture posts while scrolling for research or archival purposes. To build precise searches first, use the X advanced search builder or the operator guide.

Step 1: Install the Tampermonkey extension

  1. Open Google Chrome: Make sure Chrome is installed, then open it.
  2. Open the Tampermonkey page: Follow this link to the Tampermonkey listing in the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Select “Add to Chrome”: Use the button in the upper-right corner of the listing.
  4. Confirm the installation: When the dialog appears, select “Add extension.”
  5. Wait for completion: Let Chrome download and install the extension.

Step 2: Install the Twitter Scroll Capture userscript

  1. Open the userscript: Follow this link to the “Twitter Scroll Capture” script on GitHub Gist.
  2. Copy the script: Select and copy the complete script.
  3. Open the Tampermonkey dashboard: Select the Tampermonkey icon in the Chrome toolbar, then select “Dashboard.”
  4. Create a new script: Select the “+” icon or “Create a new script…”
  5. Paste the script: Delete the editor's existing content and paste the copied script.
  6. Save the script: Select “File” > “Save” or press Ctrl + S.
  7. Verify the installation: The Tampermonkey dashboard should list a script named “Twitter Scroll Capture.”

Step 3: Use Twitter Scroll Capture

  1. Open Twitter/X: Open Twitter/X in a new tab.
  2. Start the script: Select the “Start Recording” button that appears on the page.
  3. Scroll through posts: Move through the feed while the script captures posts.
  4. Stop recording: Select “Stop Recording” when finished.
  5. Check the clipboard: The script logs captured posts to the console and copies them to the clipboard. An alert confirms the action.

Conclusion

Tampermonkey and the “Twitter Scroll Capture” userscript are now installed. You can capture posts as you scroll through Twitter/X.
